Your Shaving Guide 101

 

When us ladies think about shaving, whether it’s our legs, underarms and or more intimate places, there’s not really much to think about – is there? Most of us have a simple, basic routine which we’ve probably done since we were about 13. A routine that sometimes involves, nicks, cuts and even irritated skin. But, that comes with the territory, right?

Wrong!

There are lots of different types of hair removal, but shaving is so popular because it seems so straightforward. However, there are ways you can improve the quality of your shave and avoid all those nasty cuts and stinging grazes. Read on for some handy and helpful shaving tips!

Make sure your skin is soft

We all lead busy lives and our morning routines are a testament to that. It’s tempting to reach for the razor as soon as you get in the shower, but giving your skin chance to moisten, and soften with the warmth and heat not only opens your follicles but also reduces the chance of nicks and grazes. So make shaving your legs the last task you do in the shower. You’ll notice a difference in the result for sure!

Use a clean, dry razor

It’s tempting to just pick up the razor you last used, but make sure that it’s clean and dry. Clogged and dirty razors are not only gross, but they also make cuts and nicks more probable. Get in the habit of cleaning your razor head and storing it away so it’s nice and dry for the next time you need it.

Apply shaving cream!

So many of us skip this step, but if you want a smooth shave that doesn’t leave your skin irritated then make sure you don’t leave it out! Applying a base layer of shaving cream will help prevent irritation. If you’re in a pinch and don’t have any, don’t sweat it – hair conditioner is perfect! It also helps reduce cuts and grazes too.

Don’t rush

Like many things, slow and steady wins the race and that philosophy definitely applies to your shaving routine. Shave up your leg starting at the ankle and take your time. You don’t need to push hard, just keep it gentle. Taking your time will help you avoid hurting yourself and irritating your skin.

Do a quick check

Once you’ve completed your shave, rinse your legs thoroughly and dry them. Then feel around for any lingering stubble. If you find any, wet your legs, apply the shaving cream and repeat the process again.

Moisturise

If like me, you always get little red bumps and lumps after you’ve shaved then make sure you’re drying your legs thoroughly and then applying a good moisturiser afterwards. Your legs will look and feel soft and fabulous!

Avoid those ingrown hairs

Ingrown hairs can look unsightly and can be painful too! They happen when a hair curls back round under the skin. If you want to avoid them, make sure you exfoliate regularly. If you have any other issues with your skin then speak to your GP.
