As it’s cold & grey and too early to get out the Xmas decorations, I thought I would cheer myself up by listing 10 Things That Make Me Happy. It’s a very therapeutic exercise to do when you are feeling glum so feel free to grab a pen & paper and join in at home.
Here goes ……..
Writing has been my love since I was little. Until the launch of this blog, I had a large collection of journals which I would use to write in as a sort of daily diary. Sometimes my frustrations as a new mum, sometimes about my love of fashion and travel. Writing has always been my way of expressing myself and the place I return to when I need comfort.
Yes, they may be the ones who also drive me insane but my family, for the most part, make me very happy. I have been blessed with 2 healthy, very active kids and after 16 years together with a marriage that seems to be withstanding the test of time.
I am very fortunate that I have been able to make a passion for writing my career. It has taken blood, sweat and tears to get to this point but I am proud to say I did it all by myself and created a brand new career for myself from scratch.
I am lucky enough to have a big group of friends who keep me sane and laughing. I can swap parenting woes with my Mummy friends and party like I am 19 again with my old school friends. Nicely placed in the middle of that is my group of business friends who all run successful businesses and support me in growing my own.
There was a time when I would rather have walked across hot coals than walk up a mountain but being out in the country surrounded by nature makes me happy. When the kids were little we used put them in carriers and go for hikes, then we used to pull them in the Yippee Yo and now they can both easily complete a 4-mile hike. It helps me clear my head and with the bonus of burning a few calories, I always feel better within minutes.
Before kids, me & Lee travelled the world together making memories and sampling exotic locations. The long haul travel was put on hold while the kids were little but as they are now 4 & 7 we can pick up where we left off. We have even booked separate short Europian breaks with friends for next year.
Following on from exercising outdoors, I have now made exercising in general a part of my everyday life. Fed up with diets and feeling sluggish I exercise every single day. Whether it’s an hour at the gym, running around the park or taking the kids on a hike, my mood and overall lust for life are increased by exercise.
Food glorious food. For me, food is happiness and comfort rolled into one. Beautiful big greek salads served with grilled meats or huge bowls of freshly made pasta bathed in bolognese sauce. Food for me is very social and whether I invite friends around or dine out at a fancy restaurant I love how food brings people together.
#SorryNotSorry. A few hours a week of watching total and utter trash on the TV makes me happy. It harms no one and is cheaper than therapy.
In the days before kids and while travelling frequently on trains and aeroplanes I loved reading books. I could spend a week on a beach in a hammock reading my favourite novel. Now with less spare time, I enjoy listening to books. This may be the lazy way to keep up with literature but with hours spent driving back and forth to school & listening to Audible while I do the dishes I can easily complete a book in 3 days. I like to mix it up by listening to classic novels and modern-day rom-com.
I hope reading this has given you 5 minutes of peace from the noise of the World. Let me know in the comments below what makes you happy ( apart from Gin )
